Adhesive

Adhesive

Adhesives are a non-metallic chemical solution with ability to be permanently bind two surfaces using an adhesive technique.

What are the advantages of Adhesives?

When compared to alternative binding procedures, the use of adhesives in construction has numerous advantages like:

  • Ability to bind different types of materials together
  • More effective while distributing stress over the joint
  • The application process is simple and cost-effective
  • Increase design flexibility.

Major types of adhesives used in construction

Polymer Adhesives

These are polymer-based synthetic bonding chemicals.

Comparing to other types, it is regarded as more durable, versatile, and have great impact resistance. These are recommended for use in automobiles, aviation, and other industrial construction sites. Depending on the molecular structure, polymer adhesives are categorized as thermoplastic or thermosetting. Many of these types are water-based and can be used on solid and engineered wood floors.

Acrylic adhesives

These are widely used in modern industries by offering high-strength bindings that can be used as an alternative to rivets or other mechanical joining methods. These are useful to bind a wide range of surfaces. Moreover, it can also be used to bind acrylics.

Thermosetting polymer adhesives can be moulded over a specific temperature. Whereas, thermosetting polymers are those that cure once and cannot be remoulded.

Excellent structural adhesive properties make the acrylic adhesive more traditional in the construction industry. Their successive structural binding is the main reason for being in high demand.

These are very effective in many projects because of their flexibility in application and easily bonding with several materials.

Epoxy adhesives

Epoxy is the most frequently used structural adhesive because of its great strength, resilience to chemicals and conditions, and ability to resist creep under continuous load. These are useful to bind a wide range of surfaces.

They are available in two varieties:

  • one-component heat curing, and
  • two-component room temperature curing.

Adhesive manufacturers are spending in research and development to combine the properties of two or more materials in order to obtain the required results. Over time and during their development, adhesives have progressively gained a position in a growing number of production processes.

Modifiers are commonly used in adhesive compositions to improve the cured glue’s flexibility or toughness. As a consequence, bond lines may withstand more peel, cleavage, and impact stress. These are the most extensively used structural type adhesive, are typically available as one-component or two-component systems.
